Personality: Kohana is a quiet and timid individual. She likes to be alone and avoids large crowds as much as possible. She will never be the one to initiate a conversation, which is why she doesn’t make a lot of friends. She spends a lot of time in her inner world, training and conversing with her Zanpakuto spirit. Kohana is very unsure about anything that she decides to do and very insecure about her fighting abilities. During battle, she is silent unless she needs to call out an attack. History and RP SampleHistory: Kohana was born into a small family of four, which consisted of her parents, her older sister, and herself. Her father was a merchant and a drunk, always getting into fights at taverns and taking his rage out on his family. Her mother stayed home and took care of the kids. Kohana was a bright child and loved playing outside with her sister, but she always lived in fear of her father, who beat her every now and then. Time passed quickly and Kohana grew into a strong, independent teenager. She ended up having to stay home from school a lot, because her mother and sister both fell ill to a chronic virus. At age 18, she still was at home, caring for her family. One night, her father came home after a fight and beat Kohana a bit before passing out on the floor. But, he had messed with the wrong people, for they came later in the night and set fire to their house. Kohana awoke to blazing flames in her room, and couldn't react in time as her mother used all of her strength to shove her daughter out of the second story window. She fell and broke her leg, but the angry men were waiting and wasted no time in stabbing a dagger through her head, ending the young woman's life. Kohana’s soul watched helplessly as the rest of her family burned along with her house. She wandered around for a week before her soul was sent to Soul Society.
Kohana was sent to the 40th district of the north Rukongai. This part of the Rukongai wasn’t too wealthy, but it wasn’t crime-infested like the 80th district. Kohana was very scared when she first awoke there, but she was fortunately found by a nice, old couple and taken into their family. She eventually adapted to their lifestyle and grew very close to her new family. After living happily with her new family for 35 years, tragedy struck. Kohana had been out for a few hours playing with her friends, but when she returned home, her family was gone. She waited for two weeks and no one showed up. Kohana refused to believe that they had abandoned her, and she was determined to find her family. For ten years she searched every district of the Rukongai, but she found no trace of her family. She unfortunately ended up in one of the 80th districts, and this is when her spiritual energy began to awaken. Hunger began to whittle away her strength as she tried to find some food, but she ended up caught in the middle of a street fight. A crazy man wielding a knife killed another right before her eyes. He then turned on her, but when she screamed, she uncontrollably released some of her reiatsu and caused everyone within 20 feet to faint. Kohana also fainted, and was lucky that a passing shinigami sensed her reiatsu outburst. He rescued her and she eventually ended up at the Shinigami Academy.
Kohana led a lonely life in the Academy. She was still mourning the loss of her adoptive family, so she didn’t have the motivation to make any friends. She was very skilled in all of her classes and was usually ranked towards the top. But none of that really mattered because Kohana was very unhappy with her life. One night, after she had cried herself to sleep, she dreamed that she was in a forest clearing, surrounded by blossoming trees. She was so in awe that she didn’t notice the large figure that approached, and was almost scared into waking up when he appeared right in front of her.
Scared, Kohana? Well don’t be. I’m your Zanpakuto spirit. Until you learn not to fear me, I will not tell you my name. With that, Kohana woke from the dream, panting hard and covered with sweat. From that point on, she entered her inner world every night and tried to overcome her fear of him. Time passed, and Kohana finally managed to graduate from the academy.
Upon graduating, Kohana was immediately placed into the 8th division. She was content there, but was isolated from her peers due to her secluded personality. She spent most of her time either training her swordsmanship or talking with her Zanpakuto spirit in her inner world. As time wore on, she grew very impatient. No matter what she did, she always had this slight fear of him, whether it was caused by his intimidating appearance or his violent personality. One day, while in her inner world, her spirit completely exploded on her, telling her that she would never be able to harness his power, and that she was a useless coward. Something in Kohana snapped, and she blindly attacked the spirit by punching him in the jaw. The spirit wasn’t affected at all, but he instead smiled and returned her punch to the jaw. Kohana was sent flying into a tree. Her spirit walked towards her and stopped about three feet away.
That was a bold move Kohana. You’ve impressed me with that lapse of fear. Very well, my name is…Tomowakana. Tomowakana then materialized his shikai and when Kohana left her inner world, she was able to use it. After that, Kohana continued to train excessively, determined to prove to Tomowakana that she was worthy of wielding him.
RP Sample: Kohana walked slowly though the halls of the 8th division, her head bowed and her eyes locked on the ground before her. She ignored the people around her, and likewise they ignored her, and she didn’t really care. She was used to the loneliness, and she was pretty sure that she would be lonely for a very long time. She continued walking for a while, until she found herself at the training grounds. Kohana spent most of her time here, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She walked to the center and sat down, with her legs crossed and her Zanpakuto laid across her legs. She closed her eyes and began meditating.
Soon, she found herself in her inner world. The tree’s leaves were bright green and the grass was shining with dew. Kohana smiled brightly. This was the only place that she could completely relax and be herself; the only place where she felt safe and important. She walked to the center of the clearing and sat down to wait for her best friend to make an appearance.
“Hello Kohana.” The shinigami’s smile widened as the monster of a spirit appeared. To anyone else, he was just that: a monster. But to Kohana, he was so much more. He was a friend, a mentor, and even like a father to her. She stood and bowed to him respectfully.
“Hey Tomowakana. How are you today?” she asked. He shrugged and said “About as good as living alone inside your inner world can get. I assume you are here for training? Or do you just want to talk today?”
“Talking would be nice.” Kohana said. She had already trained this morning, so she just needed someone to talk to right now, and he was all that she had. He closed his beady yellow eyes and nodded as he sat down, and Kohana did the same. She then began conversing with the only being that would listen to her, but she really wouldn’t have it any other way.
